Jim McCarthy interned for DGLM while studying urban design at New York University. Upon graduating, Jim realized he would much rather continue working with books than make the jump (as he had originally intended) to the field of city planning.
As an avid fiction reader, his interests encompass both literary and commercial works. He is particularly interested in literary women’s fiction, underrepresented voices, mysteries, romance, paranormal fiction, and anything unusual or unexpected. In addition to fiction he is also interested in narrative nonfiction, humor, memoir, paranormal nonfiction, and anything related to architecture, planning, or real estate.

Jessica Papin rejoins Dystel and Goderich after a three-year hiatus in Egypt, working for the American University in Cairo Press, where she oversaw the international rights sales of such authors as Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz and international best-selling author Alaa Al Aswany. She first joined Dystel and Goderich as an agent in 2003, after spending seven years as an acquiring editor at Warner Books.
With a background on both sides of the proverbial desk, Papin is as hands-on as an agent as she was as an editor; she loves working collaboratively with clients to shape and refine their work. Her stay in the Middle East (she still represents many works of modern Arab literature through the AUC Press) has given her an abiding interest in the history and politics of the region, as well as the broader Islamic world.
She is interested in literary and smart commercial fiction, narrative non-fiction, history with a thesis, medicine, science and religion. In every case, she looks for passion, erudition, and storytelling skill. She is also interested in health, psychology, and women’s issues.
